This tradition started in the 17th century when West African slaves were brought here to work on plantations. Believe it or not, the climate and landscape are similar for these two areas. As you drive along Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, you will see many basket makers huts. Some are still being used as a market place to display and sell their baskets. More often than not, the basket makers are spending their day coiling away on a new basket. To find out more about the tradition, click here.
